Song Meaning - Africa by Toto

Song: Rains of Africa
Band: Toto
Year:  1982
Source: Fren

Fact: The author of the song admits that this song was written with no particular  meaning \ story behind.

Summary: Its about the Author who wants to talk about a problem in the relationship with his person and knows for sure that it would end bad.

I hear the drums echoing tonight
But she hears only whispers of some quiet conversation
She's coming in, 12:30 flight
The moonlit wings reflect the stars that guide me towards salvation
I stopped an old man along the way
Hoping to find some long forgotten words or ancient melodies
He turned to me as if to say, "Hurry boy, it's waiting there for you"

Author foresees a stormy conversation coming up with his person.
His person does not suspect anything.
He seems to have realized on what needs to be done, yet
he goes seeking wisdom from the wise.
The wise guy states that time is the major factor to whatever his plan is.

It's gonna take a lot to take me away from you
There's nothing that a hundred men or more could ever do
I bless the rains down in Africa
Gonna take some time to do the things we never had

He is on his way to meet his person, aware of the aftermath of the
breakup that is impending and how he would have to push through it with everything that he has.
He makes some plans in the back of his mind to distract himself and to fill the void that is
going to be cast upon him once he leaves his person.

The wild dogs cry out in the night
As they grow restless, longing for some solitary company
I know that I must do what's right
As sure as Kilimanjaro rises like Olympus above the Serengeti
I seek to cure what's deep inside, frightened of this thing that I've become

The lonely thoughts at night , the restlessness, the search he would need to perform
to discover himself again. Though painful, he feels it is necessary.
This is because like the Kilimanjaro the problem he feels he has with his person
needs to be addressed, like the Kilimanjaro casting its long shadow - so has this
problem cast a darkness on his relationship with the person.

It's gonna take a lot to drag me away from you
There's nothing that a hundred men or more could ever do
I bless the rains down in Africa
Gonna take some time to do the things we never had

The herculean task of letting her go, he hopes that
time would heal and wash him of the pain like the rains that occur
after a long summer.
